Dr Vikram Iyer

Dr Vikram Iyer is a vascular and endovascular surgeon offering comprehensive management of the full spectrum of vascular conditions. Originally from Toowoomba in regional Queensland, he completed his medical degree at the University of Queensland. His work with the Queensland Research Centre for Peripheral Vascular Disease led to an MPhil research degree in 2018, and he was awarded the inaugural Professor Philip Walker Vascular Surgery Research Scholarship through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for research on biomarkers in abdominal aortic aneurysm, along with a Junior Doctor Research Fellowship from the Queensland Government. He trained in Brisbane, New Zealand and Melbourne, and provided emergency vascular surgical care to victims of the Christchurch mosque shootings in 2019.

Vikram is equally adept with traditional open surgery, minimally invasive endovascular treatment and medical management of vascular disease. He has a special interest in the medical and surgical management of aortic aneurysms and dissections, on which he has published extensively, and has performed multiple first-in-Victoria aortic procedures. He also has an interest in limb salvage intervention for patients with chronic limb-threatening ischaemia and advanced diabetic foot disease. He is involved with the Aortic and High Risk Foot Services at the Alfred Hospital.

Vikram holds public hospital appointments at the Alfred and Northern Hospitals. He is passionate about teaching: he is Supervisor of Vascular Training at The Northern Hospital, was co-convenor of the annual vascular surgery trainee skills course in Melbourne in 2023 and served on the organising committee of the ANZ Vascular Conference in 2024. He has been an invited speaker at multiple international meetings including the ANZ Vascular Conference, Aortic Asia, the Vascular Society of India Conference, the Lower Extremity Amputation Prevention Symposium and the Asian Society of Vascular Surgery Conference. He is on the Executive Committee of the Global Vascular Companionship, a not-for-profit organisation committed to improving access to vascular surgical care in developing nations, and led a mission to Mongolia in 2025 to bolster vascular service provision there. He also has a teaching appointment as a lecturer at Monash University, delivering lectures and tutorials to medical students on vascular surgical pathology, principles and procedures.

Vikram's MPhil research examined biomarkers in abdominal aortic aneurysm, and he has published extensively on aortic aneurysms and dissections. He continues to participate in research and presents at local, national and international conferences, with current projects looking at outcomes after endovascular aortic arch replacement and the training of future surgeons in open aortic procedures.
